When you walk into a room and a light switch or powerpoint is in a wrong spot, it's immediately the first thing you notice! Nothing can undo a great home layout like a switch being in the wrong spot. To try and help rid the world of badly placed switches and points, here's our never fail guide of where to put them.
Hallways
Hallways can often be forgotten when planning out switches and points, but light and power in this area of the house is so important! Long hallways can often be dark, and can be hard to navigate with the vacuum cleaner if you've got a lot of space between powerpoints! Be sure to provide light switches and points at the beginning and end of a hall.
Bathrooms
When it comes to light switches, it's best to locate the bathroom light switch just inside the entry door to the bathroom. If the bathroom light switch were located outside of the bathroom, say in a hallway, then someone may be using the bathroom and another unknowing person outside may turn the bathroom light off!
For powerpoints, beside the vanity is essential (think about all those hair straighteners and blow-dryers)! Keep sockets within an arms reach of the vanity or mirror so that all those bathroom morning-routine activities can happen quick-smart!
Bedrooms
Light switches in the bedroom should be placed inside the door frame, on the opposite side of the way the bedroom door opens.
When it comes to powerpoints, providing a socket for your bedside lamp is a must. But, with mobile phones being our new beside buddy, make sure that you have enough power sockets for your desired number of appliances. Or, better yet, you can now install USB sockets directly into the wall – if you use an iPhone and iPad, you might want to install these outlets as well!
Kitchens
The heart of the home, the kitchen is perhaps the most important room to consider when planning your switches and sockets.
Light switches should be placed as you enter the room, but also also you walk into the next room of the house (usually the living or outdoor area).
For powersockets, you'll need to need to supply A LOT of power to this room for kitchen appliances. Think about where you want to store each of these items, so you'll know where to place their easy each powerpoints. Some will inevitably live on your kitchen bench and remain plugged in day-in and day-out, so ensure you install sockets beside the bench for these items. If you are keeping some appliances hidden in the pantry or in a drawer, remember to install a socket on the back of the pantry wall, or in the appliance drawer – that way you don’t have to move the appliances onto the kitchen bench every time you want to use them. Also, perhaps the most important sockets of all, don't forget your points for the kitchen and dishwasher!
