Electrical Hazards at Home

B&L North Eastern Electrical take you through some of the most common electrical hazards to find at home and how we could help eradicate them.

Whether you own an old or modern home, electrical hazards can appear anywhere. Luckily, a lot of these hazards can be reduced or eliminated by making a few small changes. Today, we take you through some of the most common dangers and how they can be avoided or fixed.

  1. Outlets Close to Water
Power outlets that are placed in rooms like the kitchen, bathroom and outdoor living areas should be installed a far enough distances away from any water source. If not, you could be in a very real danger of getting an electric shock!

Same goes for appliances – ensure that things like your toaster, radio or phone charger don’t go near any sinks or wet floors.

  1. Extension Cords
Extension Cords shouldn’t be used as a permanent substitute for more power sockets and shouldn’t be used for too many appliances at once. Try to only use extension cords if you have to and only for a short amount of time – that way, you can reduce the chance of tripping or accidents.

  1. Curious Kids!
As a lot of us already know, kids are curious! They like to explore and learn things by touch and feel – but that can sometimes be dangerous when it comes to powerpoints and electrical sources. Any powerpoint at a child’s level can be replaced with Extra Safe powerpoints. These can be interchanged with a normal powerpoints and prevent sharp objects or fingers from going into the socket.

  1. Covered Electrical Cords or Wires
The covering of wires and electrical cords can cause them to overheat, which could lead to an electrical fire. Keep cords and wires away from items that could be flammable and  make sure that items like computers and televisions have enough  ventilation.

  1. Poor Wiring
This is perhaps one of the most common electrical hazards we see at homes across North East Victoria. Good quality wiring is a must for your safety, as faulty wiring can increase the risk of fire hazards, power surges and arc faults.
